For most theater trips, wear smart casual: dark jeans or tailored trousers with a good knit or blouse, a midi dress or skirt with boots, and shoes you can climb stairs in. Very few theaters have a dress code today. What changes the outfit is the venue, the weather on the night and where your coat goes, so dress up a step for opera, ballet and opening nights, and keep it relaxed for a local or fringe show.
The harder part is usually the coat and the weather on the night, not the dress code. The app we make, Wdrobe, can plan the evening outfit with that day's forecast once your clothes are in it.
Is there a dress code at the theater?
Almost never. Broadway, London's West End and most regional theatres let you wear what you like, and you will see jeans and trainers next to cocktail dresses in the same row. The exceptions are a few opera houses on gala nights, private events, and some dinner theatres, which say so on the ticket.
So the real question is what will feel right in that room. Three things decide it:
- The venue. A grand old house with chandeliers invites a bit more effort than a studio theatre above a pub.
- The occasion. A birthday, a date or a holiday show is a reason to dress up. A Tuesday matinee is not.
- The seat. You sit still for two to three hours in a warm, packed room. Tight waistbands, scratchy wool and heels you cannot stand in all get worse by the interval.
What to wear to a Broadway show
Broadway is smart casual for most people. Dark denim is fine; so is a dress. Aim for one level above what you would wear to dinner nearby.
1. Black knit dress and ankle boots
A fine black knit midi dress with black leather ankle boots works for every Broadway show, from a musical to a serious play. Add gold earrings and you are done.
Outfit formula: black fine-knit midi dress + black leather ankle boots + small gold hoops + black crossbody bag.
2. Dark jeans, silk blouse, loafers
Dark indigo jeans read as smart in a theater when the top is polished. A cream or navy silk blouse and leather loafers do it.
Outfit formula: dark straight-leg jeans + cream silk blouse + black loafers + camel wool coat.
The question a list cannot answer is whether you own these pieces in a version that works together. Most people have the jeans and the boots but not the top that lifts them. Check your wardrobe for the missing piece before the night, not on the way out.
What to wear to a local theater or a play
A local theatre, a community production or a fringe show is relaxed. Wear what you would wear to a nice pub or a casual dinner, with one thing that feels a bit special.
3. Jumper, midi skirt and flat boots
A soft jumper in burgundy, forest green or grey over a pleated or satin midi skirt, with flat knee boots, is warm, comfortable to sit in and looks put together.
Outfit formula: merino jumper + satin midi skirt + flat leather knee boots + wool scarf.
4. Wide-leg trousers and a fitted knit
Wide-leg wool trousers are as comfortable as jeans for a long sit but look smarter. Pair them with a fitted ribbed knit and low block heels.
Outfit formula: grey wide-leg wool trousers + black ribbed knit top + low block-heel boots + short wool jacket.
What to wear to the ballet or the opera
Ballet and opera audiences dress up more, especially for evening and holiday performances. Think of it as a nice dinner out.
5. The Nutcracker in December
The Nutcracker is a family outing for many people, and the audience leans festive. A velvet dress or a velvet blazer in deep green, burgundy or navy suits the night, and it photographs well in the foyer. For children, a smart dress or shirt and comfortable shoes is plenty.
Outfit formula: deep green velvet midi dress + black tights + black block-heel shoes + long dark wool coat.
6. Opera or a gala night
For a premiere or a gala, wear what you would wear to a cocktail party: a satin slip dress under a tailored blazer, or a dark trouser suit with a silk camisole. Black and jewel colours suit the setting.
Outfit formula: black satin slip dress + black tailored blazer + strappy heels you can walk in + small evening bag.
The coat question: cloakroom or lap
This is the one problem the dress-code guides skip. In winter you arrive in a coat, and then you have to put it somewhere.
- Big houses (opera, ballet, many Broadway and West End theatres) usually have a cloakroom. Expect a queue at the end, so allow ten minutes.
- Smaller theatres often have no cloakroom. The coat goes on your lap or under the seat, where space is tight.
So for a small venue, pick a coat that folds small: a wool jacket, a short puffer or a trench with a warm knit under it. Save the long, heavy coat for venues with a cloakroom. Layers also help with the room itself, which can be cold in the first act and warm by the second.
Before you pick the coat, look at the forecast for the show night. A dry 8°C (46°F) evening and a wet one need different coats and shoes. Plan the outfit for that evening's weather so you are not choosing at the door.
Shoes and bags for the theater
- Shoes: you may walk from the station, climb to the upper circle and stand in an interval queue. Block heels, loafers, flat boots and smart trainers all work. Save stilettos for nights with a car door to the theatre door.
- Bag: many theaters check bags at the door. A small crossbody bag goes through faster and fits on your lap.
- Hats and big hair accessories: take them off or skip them. The person behind you paid for the stage view.
What to wear to the theater by weather
- Cold and dry: knits, wool trousers or tights with a skirt, ankle boots, and a coat that fits the cloakroom question above.
- Cold and wet: dark colours that hide splashes, leather or rubber-soled boots, and an umbrella that folds small.
- Mild: a dress or blouse with a light jacket. The room will be warm, so skip the heavy jumper.
- Summer: linen trousers, a cotton dress or a silk top. Bring a light cardigan, because air conditioning in older theatres can be strong.
Frequently asked questions
What should a female wear to the theatre?
Smart casual works almost everywhere: a midi dress with boots, dark jeans with a silk blouse, or wide-leg trousers with a fitted knit. Dress up a step for opera, ballet and opening nights. Choose shoes you can walk and climb stairs in.
Can you wear jeans to a Broadway show?
Yes. Jeans are common on Broadway. Dark, clean jeans with a smart top, a blazer or a good coat look right for most shows.
What do you wear to a play in winter?
Warm layers you can take off: a knit or blouse with a jacket, tights with a skirt or wool trousers, and boots. Pick a coat you can keep on your lap if the venue has no cloakroom.
What should I wear to see the Nutcracker?
Something festive and comfortable: a velvet dress, a dark trouser suit or a smart knit with a skirt. The audience dresses up more than for a play, but there is no dress code.
Is it OK to wear trainers to the theatre?
Yes, at most theatres. Clean leather trainers with dark trousers or a dress are fine. For opera and gala nights, loafers or boots look better.
If the show is part of a bigger evening, these office to dinner outfits help when you go straight from work, and the holiday party outfit ideas work for a December performance with drinks after. For the coat itself, see how to choose a winter coat.
Theatre tickets are often booked weeks ahead, and the outfit gets decided ten minutes before you leave. Wdrobe's planner has a Night slot for each day with that day's forecast, so you can set the theatre outfit when you book and see it on the morning of the show. You can also ask its stylist for an outfit and type "theatre" as the occasion. Save the outfit for show night so the evening starts calm.
