The Cost-Per-Wear Formula: Is That Purchase Worth It?
4 min read

Cost per wear is the purchase price divided by the number of times you actually
wear an item. A €120 coat worn 120 times costs €1 per wear; a €40 party top worn
twice costs €20 per wear. The formula cannot decide what you love, but it makes
optimistic shopping assumptions visible.
For a piece you have not bought, the wear count is a guess, and guesses run high. Try the shop photo on your own picture in the Wdrobe app and see it on you before guessing the wears.
Use the cost-per-wear formula
Include necessary alterations, repair, and specialist cleaning in the total
cost when they are predictable. Use actual logged wears for clothes you own and
a conservative estimate for something you are considering.
Do not divide by how often you could wear it. Estimate from your real calendar,
climate, laundry habits, and similar garments.
Forecast an impulse buy honestly
Before buying, answer:
Which three specific occasions will I wear it to?
Which shoes, layer, and undergarments complete it?
Do I own a similar item competing for those wears?
Can I care for it in the way it requires?
Would I choose it on an ordinary day?
Then create three complete outfits using clothes you already own. If every
formula requires another purchase, the true cost is larger than the price tag.
Cost per wear needs a wear count, and almost nobody has one. Estimating from memory is how a coat gets called a bargain. Start counting properly.
Set a useful target, not one universal number
A winter coat, running shoe, wedding guest outfit, and evening bag have
different jobs. Expecting the same cost per wear from all of them is not
realistic.
Set a rough target by category. Everyday basics and outerwear should usually
earn frequent use. A rare occasion piece may have a higher cost per wear but
still be worthwhile if it solves a recurring need, fits well, and can be worn
for years.
Review clothes you already own
Log wears for a month, then examine the low-use items:
Does it need repair or alteration?
Is it difficult to combine?
Is the care process inconvenient?
Is the occasion genuinely rare?
Did the purchase represent an imagined lifestyle?
Some pieces need a new outfit formula; others should be sold or donated. The
number is information, not a reason to keep wearing something uncomfortable.
Use value alongside fit and joy
Cost per wear ignores emotional value, ethics, durability, and the pleasure of
a special garment. Use it as one decision tool. A low price is not automatically
good value, and a high price is not proof of quality.
Test the outfit before the purchase
Wdrobe can help you combine a possible purchase with your actual wardrobe and
save the outfits you would wear. That gives your estimated wear count a more
realistic foundation.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cost per wear?
Divide the price by the number of times you realistically expect to wear it. A €200 coat worn twice a week for three winters costs under €1 per wear; a €60 dress worn twice costs €30.
Is cost per wear a reliable guide?
It is useful for comparing similar items and misleading when used to justify a purchase. The estimate of future wears is the weak part, and it is almost always optimistic.
What is a good cost per wear?
Under about €2 for everyday items and under €5 for occasion pieces is a reasonable target. More useful than any threshold is checking the estimate afterwards against what you actually wore.
Cost per wear only means anything if you are actually counting wears, which nobody does from memory. Log wears as they happen and get a real number instead of an estimate.
