Packing for a week in one carry-on is easier when you plan outfits first and
items second. Build a compact palette, repeat bottoms and layers, and let every
shoe support several looks. You need enough combinations for the trip, not seven
unrelated head-to-toe outfits.

Once the case is zipped, the plan for day five lives only in your head. Save each day's outfit to the Wdrobe app's planner and you can check day five's outfit from the hotel.

Check the trip before the closet

List the likely weather, walking, dress codes, laundry access, and one unusual
event. Use the forecast near departure, but plan one warmer and one cooler
version.

Choose a palette of two neutrals, denim, and one accent. This lets layers and
shoes move between outfits without looking accidental.

A practical one-week packing list

Adjust quantities to your laundry access:

  • four tops;

  • two bottoms;

  • one dress, skirt, or third bottom;

  • one light layer;

  • one weather layer;

  • two pairs of shoes;

  • sleepwear and underwear;

  • one compact bag; and

  • a few small accessories.

Wear the bulkiest shoes and outer layer in transit. Do not pack a “just in case”
shoe that works with only one outfit.

Carry-on packing fails at the fourth day. Seven outfits from twelve pieces works on paper and needs checking against real clothes. Check twelve pieces really make seven.

Build seven core outfits

Lay out complete combinations:

  1. travel day: knit, comfortable trousers, weather layer, sneakers;

  2. active day: tee, jeans, sneakers;

  3. polished day: shirt, trousers, loafers;

  4. warm day: light top, skirt or dress, comfortable shoe;

  5. cool day: shirt, knit, jeans, closed shoe;

  6. dinner: dress or polished separates, small bag; and

  7. repeat day: favorite top, alternate bottom, fresh accessory.

Now make a second version of at least three outfits by swapping the top, layer,
or shoe. That gives flexibility when the weather or plan changes.

Pack by outfit function

Photograph each formula before folding anything. Keep travel-size care items
for the fabrics you bring, and avoid clothes that crease badly unless your
accommodation has an iron.

Place shoes at the suitcase edge, fill them with small items, and use packing
cubes only if they help you see categories. Compression does not change the
weight limit.

Leave deliberate empty space

An overfilled carry-on is difficult to repack and leaves no room for wet,
dirty, or unfolded clothes. Remove the least versatile item rather than
compressing more.

For a city-specific version, use the same method but prioritize walking shoes,
a weather layer, and secure bag.

Save every outfit before departure

Wdrobe can help you see the capsule as complete looks and keep the combinations
on your phone. A visual plan makes repeating pieces feel intentional and reduces
unnecessary backups.

Packing light is far easier when the clothes were chosen for it, which is the whole point of a travel capsule.

Frequently asked questions

How many outfits do you need for a week in a carry-on?

Around five to seven combinations from roughly twelve items, achieved by making every top work with every bottom. Packing complete outfits rather than combinable pieces is what fills a case.

What should you pack for a week in one bag?

Two bottoms, four tops, one dress or one-piece option, one mid layer, one weather layer and two pairs of shoes. Wear the bulkiest items on the plane.

How do you avoid overpacking?

Lay out everything, then remove the items that work in only one outfit. The 'just in case' pieces are almost always the ones that come home unworn.

A week in a carry-on works only if every piece combines with several others, which is a check rather than a guess. Build the outfits first and pack to the list.
