How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

A travel capsule has to cover the itinerary, the forecast, the walking and any dress codes, out of one small bag.
Trip photos outlast the trip, and a week in one palette shows up in every frame. Our app, Wdrobe, reads your coloring from one face photo: build the trip palette from shades that suit you.
What a good travel capsule has to do
Decide the trip before the clothes: how many days, what the forecast says, and whether anything has a dress code. Space in the bag and access to laundry are the two constraints that actually bite.
Pack for the trip you are taking, not for every trip you might take. If the capsule survives one itinerary, it will survive the next one like it.
Five steps, in order
1. Write the itinerary and weather range before choosing a color palette
A five-day trip with one evening out needs a different list from five days of walking, and the forecast decides the layers before the palette does. Write the number of days, the high and low, and any evening that needs more than trainers.
2. Select two bottoms and one one-piece option that share every top
Two bottoms and one dress or jumpsuit will carry a week as long as every top works with all three. That is three bottoms' worth of outfits out of two, which is where the weight saving comes from.
A travel capsule is judged on combinations per kilo. Twelve pieces that make nine outfits beats twenty that make nine. Count yours before packing.
3. Use one mid layer and one weather layer instead of several special jackets
One warm mid layer and one that keeps rain off beats three jackets that each do a single job. A packable shell and a merino crew weigh less together than one winter coat and cover more weather.
4. Make both shoe choices support walking and at least three complete outfits
Two pairs: one you can walk all day in and one that lifts an outfit, and both have to go with at least three looks. Wear the bulkier pair on the plane and the bag only has to carry one.
5. Rehearse every day and keep one deliberate backup combination
Lay each day out before it goes in the bag, and keep one spare combination for the day something gets spilled. The backup is usually a second top, since that is what gets spilled on first.
Judge it when you get home
Unpack and note what you never touched. Anything worn once was usually a hedge against a situation that did not happen, and it is the first thing to leave out next time.
If the trip exposes a gap, write the function rather than the product: a jacket that handles rain and still looks right at dinner, not a better jacket. Then check whether something already in the wardrobe does that job.
Frequently asked questions
What goes in a travel capsule wardrobe?
Two bottoms, four tops, one dress or one-piece option, one mid layer, one weather layer and two pairs of shoes. That produces a week of outfits from about twelve items in a carry-on.
How do you pack a capsule wardrobe for a week?
Choose one color palette so every piece combines, wear the bulkiest items in transit, and pack combinable pieces rather than complete outfits. Packing outfits is what fills a case.
How many shoes should you pack?
Two: one you can walk in all day and one for evenings. A third pair is the most common packing mistake and almost always comes home unworn.
Travel capsules go wrong when two items turn out not to combine, which you discover in a hotel room. Build and check the outfits before the case is packed.
